Barry William
Cronkhite
Nov 28, 1943 — Jul 23, 2024
GLENS FALLS --- Barry William Cronkhite, 80, of Glens Falls, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, after complications from a fall.
Barry was born on November 28, 1943, to William and Beverly (Short) Cronkhite in Fort Edward, New York.
After graduating high school, Barry enlisted in the Army and proudly served for 21 years, including 2 tours in Vietnam, until he retired in 1983. Thereafter, Barry worked for Evergreen Bank and the New York State Department of Higher Education. Barry was a proud member of both the VFW and American Legion and served as the VFW Quartermaster for Post No. 6196 for 14 years.
Barry and his wife of 48 years, Margaret "Peggy" Reardon, grew up on the same street and, since 1983, lived and raised three children -- Amanda Beth, Adam Barry and Allison Blair, aka the Three ABCs -- in the same house Peggy grew up in.
Barry was a big man with a big heart and a big laugh. He always watched both the Mets and the Yankees with his youngest daughter, scotch and soda in hand. One of the proudest moments of his life was, as a retired sergeant, pinning bars on and then having to salute his officer son. He was so giddy after his son-in-law asked for his eldest's hand that he almost ruined the proposal! He loved when his kids' dogs would visit and somehow always managed to give the dogs way more treats than the humans allowed, earning him the moniker "the Cheese Man."
Barry was predeceased by his brother, Philip.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy; children, Allison, Adam and his wife, Helen, and Amanda and her husband, Gonzalo; sister, Susanne and her husband, Gary; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place Monday, July 29, 2024, from 11 am to 1 pm at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.
A funeral will follow at 1 pm with the Rev. Colin Belton officiating.
A graveside ceremony with military honors will follow at Pine View Cemetery in Queensbury.
A gathering will be held at the Queensbury VFW, 32 Luzerne Rd., Queensbury, NY 12804. Barry specified in his last days that he wanted a party there, for all his friends and family.
Barry loved dogs, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local animal shelter, or to the Queensbury VFW.
Condolences may be sent directly to Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, or through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.
