Obituary

HUDSON FALLS --- Brian P.G. DeMell, 86, got his angel wings on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Brian was born on March 29, 1937, to his father Vito and mother Alice (Donley) DeMell who predeceased him, along with his brother, Neil and sister-in-law, Dorothy.

He leaves behind his nephew, Keith David DeMell of Tennessee, and 2 great nieces.

Brian served for a short time in the Navy.

Brian was a licensed electrician who at one time worked at Hill Electric, and then went out on his own. He joined the International Alliance of Theatrical & Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 524 on June 7, 1971, where he held the office of secretary-treasurer for many years. It was at this time that he became a member of the Glens Falls Operetta Club, now known as Glens Falls Community Theater, where he worked backstage doing carpentry, electrical work, lighting, and sound. He also worked as a union electrician and spotlight operator at the Glens Falls Civic Center, and he was still a union member at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Labor Council.

Brian had a love of music and was an instructor of folk dance in Kingsbury and Queensbury in the 1970's and 80's. He became the master of the music, collecting tapes and playing them for dances. He was master of the steps for new folks and loved to teach.

He was a member of St. Mary's - St. Paul's in Hudson Falls, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a cantor for over 37 years, singing for hundreds of funerals. There he served as a member of the choir, going all the way back to the 1960's. Brian once said, "When I sing (in church), it is my way of telling the members of the parish how much I love them." For decades, he served as a lector at Mass, profoundly and eloquently proclaiming the Word of God. For the last eight years, Brian faithfully served in the Faith Formation program (Sunday morning church school) as a door guard.
