Obituary

QUEENSBURY --- Charles "Charlie" Maine, 90, of Queensbury, NY passed away Monday, January 16, 2017.

Charlie was born on September 20, 1926 in Hamilton, NY the son of the late Carlton A. Maine and Agnes (Kelly) Maine.

Upon graduation from Hamilton High School, he was drafted into the Army in 1945. After discharge he attended Morrisville State College and upon graduation he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In 1954 he married Beverly French of Watertown and they moved to Lansing, Michigan, where he attended Michigan State University. Upon graduation from MSU he was employed as a soil scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Oneida County. He was transferred to Washington County and subsequently Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District. At this time he mapped the soils of Warren County and authored, The Soil Survey of Warren County.

In the early 1970's he and his wife purchased the Ferguson Barn and property on Ridge Road and developed Butternut Hill. Later they went on to develop Stonehurst in Queensbury.

Charlie enjoyed the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and looked forward to hunting deer in the Catskills with friends and elk in Montana, Colorado and New Mexico. He enjoyed bird watching at his many feeders and following his MSU Spartans basketball and football teams.

Charlie is survived by Beverly, his wife of 63 years, a daughter, Amanda and her husband Christian Mohr, his sisters Frances Kwiatkoski and her husband Tony and Marilyn Keith as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by two brothers, Carlton Jr. and Arthur and three sisters, Berniece Bikowski, Laurie Spooner and Patricia Russell.

Charlie was a member of Christ Church United Methodist where he served as trustee and teller. He served on the Parks and Recreation Commission for the Town of Queensbury for 18 years. Charlie served as a board member for the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District for 30 years and was a Greater Adirondack RC & D Representative for the district and brought to the RC& D The Venison Donation Coalition program, which makes tens of thousands of meals of venison available from hunters for food pantries across the state.

Charlie, "Hoke", was a loving husband, father, uncle and friend and will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 21, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist, 54 Bay Street, Glens Falls.

A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the church with the Rev. David Lockwood officiating.

Following the service a reception will be held in the church's Fellowship Hall.
