Charles Henry
Scudder
Mar 2, 1930 — Mar 1, 2017
GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK - Charles Henry Scudder passed away a day shy of his 87
th
birthday on March 1, 2017. He was surrounded by his loving family at Glens Falls Hospital throughout his brief illness. "Charlie", as family and friends knew him, was the third son of Ralph Clinton Scudder and Mary Elizabeth Crawford Scudder of Northport, New York.
Born in Huntington Hospital on Long Island, Charlie grew up on the water in neighboring Northport. Charlie loved to sail. Like his grandfather, Captain Charles Henry Scudder, he raked clams and oysters. He played football and was a trumpeter for the high school marching band. Charlie graduated from Northport High School in 1948, then went on to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point where among other things he learned to navigate. After extended tours at sea Charlie realized that commercial sailing was not his calling. He enrolled in night school to study civil engineering at New York University.
In 1954 Charlie married his high school sweetheart, Delores Estelle Johnson, of East Northport. To their surprise, he was drafted into the army three weeks later and was stationed at Fort Monmouth Army Base, New Jersey. He received a Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged. Three years later he earned his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Houston, and in 1961, earned his Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Charlie soon after became a licensed Professional Engineer in New York State.
He went on to form Foley & Scudder Consulting Engineers with Patrick Foley of Chestertown, New York. Charlie continued in private practice, working in environmental and civil engineering until the end of his life. He worked as Chief Engineer and Project Manager for Waggaman & Collyer Contractors, Inc. of Glens Falls on the expansion of the Milton Bradley Campus in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Throughout Charlie's career, he provided consulting engineering services to individuals, commercial and industrial business clients, educational institutions, and municipalities. In all, Charlie worked as an engineer for 55 years.
Charlie's intelligent mind was rivaled only by his tender heart and gentle, bright spirit. He touched the lives of all he met with his charm, wit, humility, tenderness and good nature, moving through the world as an exemplary gentleman. He was devoted to professionally serving and connecting with local people. He dearly loved the people in Warren, Washington and Saratoga Counties, and frequently took drives through the rolling farmland of Washington County. A lover of simple beauty, Charlie carried a deep respect for farmers, animals, and the land.
A former member of the Glens Falls Country Club, Charlie was an avid golfer. He loved classical music, literature, film, and spending time with his family. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Leroy, Ralph and Robert Scudder.
Charlie leaves behind four children, Kim Call Scudder of Marin/Monterey, CA, Holly Lee Scudder of Simsbury, CT, Russell Crawford Scudder and his wife, Jodi Scudder of Falmouth, ME, and Brett Andrew Scudder of Wolfeboro, NH; three grandchildren, Andrew Charles Gorton of West Danby, New York, Caitlin Anne Scudder of Bali, Indonesia, and Benjamin Charles Scudder of Grapevine, Texas; and two great grandchildren, James Lewis and William Andrew Gorton of West Danby, New York.
The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the nurses, aides and attendants at the Glens Falls Hospital Cardiac Care, Intensive Care, and Oncology Care Units. The family especially wishes to thank Dr. Paul Bachman, Dr. Robert Beaty, Dr. Frances Bollinger, Dr. Ellen Cosgrove, and Dr. Christopher Mason for their care and compassion for our beloved father.
