Glens Falls --- Mrs. Cornell "Connie" Belton of Glens Falls and formerly of Harlem and Newburgh NY, passed away Friday March 9, 2018, at Glens Falls Hospital.
Born September 9, 1922, in Camden, S.C. in Kershaw County, 1 st born child of the late Ned Singleton and Lula (James) Singleton.
A student of the Kershaw County school system, Cornell later married Willie Belton who served in the United States Army. She later moved with her husband and children to New York City. Cornell was an entrepreneur and owner of Connie's Soul Food in Newburgh, N.Y.
She was a former member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Newburgh, N.Y. and after relocating to Glens Falls, N.Y., she became a member of the Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church.
Cornell had a love of cooking, she really enjoyed cooking for family and friends, she loved to bowl and go fishing in her spare time. She would also challenge anyone to a game of skeet-ball at the arcade. She was a member of the Eastern Stars and loved to travel with her senior group.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 76 years, Willie Belton, as well as her children William Belton, George Belton, Vernon Belton, and First Lady Cynthia Belton Oates, and her great grandchild Rahkim Belton-Owens. She was also predeceased by her sisters Amelia, Ethel Lee, Helen, and brothers Jonny, Joseph, and James Edward.
Survivors include her sister Jannette Ansley; brothers Willie Singleton and Thomas James Singleton; son-in-law Rev. Leonard Oates; daughters-in-law Minnie Belton and Ellen Belton; grandchildren Sharif Abdur-Rahim, Renee Y. Belton, Tavia L. Belton, Nijel Bethea, Jamila Belton, Beyonna Belton-James, Chris Snead, Jamal Snead and Tobias Snead, great grandchildren Dawayne Belton-Owens, Shyheim Belton-Owens, Jada Belton, Ivana Brandy-Claudette White, Jakouri Leonard Holmes, Jole' Johnson, Kazi Abdur-Rahim, Assata Belton-James, Cyncere Belton-James.
Calling hours will take place Friday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church of Glens Falls, 15 Nelson St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
A funeral service will follow at the church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Leonard Oates officiating.
Interment will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville.
