LAKE LUZERNE --- Donald C. Piper Sr., 93, most recently a resident of Slate Valley Center in Granville, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023.
Born December 30, 1929 in Middlebury, Vt., he was the son of Chester W. and Doris I. (Billings) Piper.
Don joined the United States Army in 1951, serving in the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in 1953, Don began his life long career as a truck driver. Don's two sons, Don Jr. and Mike, along with grandsons, Shannon and Derek, proudly followed in his footsteps, driving truck for three generations. When he wasn't driving, Don enjoyed watching baseball, and routing for the New York Yankees. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially while working together on his old Ford pickup.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his wife, Olive Piper, and two children, Deborah and Michael Piper.
Survivors include four children, Connie Husek of South Glens Falls, Darlene Piper Sheret of Vermont, Donald C. (Darlene) Piper Jr. of Fort Edward, and Cindy Piper of Cambridge; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside ceremony with military honors will take place Friday, October 27, at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville. The Patriot Guard Riders of N.Y. will also assist at the ceremony.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Slate Valley and Washington Center for their care and compassion, and also to the Patriot Guard Riders for attending and supporting their family at the service.
