Obituary

GLENS FALLS --- It is with sadness we announce the death of Dorothy Jean (Tilling) Long on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Glens Falls Hospital.

Dorrie was born in London, England on February 5, 1930 to William "Harry" Tilling and Ellen "Nell" Tilling.

She was an evacuee during World War II. Once she finished schooling, she was apprenticed with a high fashion designer, Molyneux, dressmaker to celebrities and the Royal family.

At age 17, Dorrie met George Long at a dance and they were married when she was 18. Their union lasted 65 years until his death on March 6, 2013. They had a rich and varied lifestyle, full of adventures and were true partners in all aspects of life. They had three children, Ann Radtke of Queensbury, Susan (Frank) Bicknell of Glens Falls, and Stephen Long of Rutland, V.T.

George was in the British Army and Dorothy was with him in postings including Austria, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Once he retired from the army, Dorothy and he emigrated to Canada and the adventures continued. They lived in Toronto, Ontario, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Vancouver, British Columbia where they both had successful real estate careers. In the 1970's, Dorrie's favorite adventure began with the move to New York State where they purchased Blue Water Manor in Bolton Landing. Dorrie thoroughly enjoyed over 30 years at the helm until their retirement. Over the years, many former guests and staff remained in touch. Once retired, residence was taken in Glens Falls, and winters in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

Dorrie was a widow for 5 years, but as in all her life experiences, was a strong woman who enjoyed family and friends, political debates and the game, Upwords. The last two years brought steady decline which was greatly eased by her loving caregiver, Barb Schramel.

Dorrie was predeceased by her parents, William "Harry" Tilling, and Ellen "Nell" Tilling, her parents-in-law, Joseph Long and Winnifred Long; her brothers, Bill and Alec Tilling; Michael Long and his wife, Anna; as well as a great grandson, Stephen Tyler Radtke who died at birth.

Dorrie is survived by her children; her grandchildren, Andreas (Andy) Radtke, Michael (Veronica Stephens) Radtke, Sean (Erika) Bicknell, Sarah Long and Molly (Josh) West; great grandchildren, Austin Radtke, Chelsea Radtke, Maddie Radtke, Cameron Erano, Shani Sommer, and Lily West; her sister, Eileen (Howie) Atkinson; sister-in-law, Maureen Tilling and their children.

Some of her special friends included Dawn Chester Brunner, Edie Gerrie, Michael Doxie, Annalisa Sommariva, and Karen and Lester Gerhardt, Bob and Sharon Taylor.

At Dorrie's request there will be no calling hours.

A private gathering will be held at the family home. Cremation has taken place.
