LAKE GEORGE --- Dorothy Jane (Duncan) Whinnery, 88, of Lake George, NY and Palmetto, FL, passed peacefully with her husband and family by her side on January 17, 2017.

Born on April 1, 1928 in Schenectady, NY, she was the beloved middle daughter to the late Percy and Sophie Duncan and cherished sister of Patricia DiBiase (Don) and the late Barbara (John) Ellis. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School, Schenectady, and Mildred Elley Business School in Albany, NY.

At the age of 17, her beautiful and perhaps flirtatious smile caught the attention of Richard Whinnery while roller skating, and so began their eternal love story. They wed when she was 20, and their 68 year marriage was a reflection of immeasurable love and devotion, humor and respect.

Dot worked in her father's store in Schenectady until she married in 1948, then lived in Ballston Spa until 1957, when they settled in Burnt Hills. She enjoyed various office jobs over the years, becoming a loyal friend and confidant to countless lucky people. Although she could somehow see what her children were doing from miles away, it was very important to her to be home with them every summertime. To her children, Michael Richard Whinnery (Sheila), Jeffrey Duncan Whinnery (Pam), and Lori Jane Randall (Rick), she was a devoted, steadfast mother whose intuitive guidance and graceful strength will inspire evermore.

In 1994, Dorothy and Rich established a winter home in Palmetto, FL, where she was actively involved in all the community offered, from planning parties to posing a formidable challenge in poker tournaments. She and Rich loved to socialize, and spent countless nights with friends around the table playing games and laughing. She was a member of the Burnt Hills Fire Department Auxiliary and also enjoyed camping, reading and music. In 1996, they moved to Lake George where, true to form, she established many friends. She rarely sat still, but even then was likely perusing the internet or adding to her many lists of what was next to come. She volunteered at Glens Falls Hospital for several years and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Queensbury.

Nan was an adoring grandmother to Jennifer (Scott) Crawford, Eric Whinnery, Tessa (Alex) Kratz, Alec Randall, Hailey Randall, and Shannon Moyer, and precious great grandmother to Naomi Crawford, Kaegan Crawford, Naya Kratz, and Elliott Kratz. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a myriad of treasured friends. They will forever benefit by her gentle love and wisdom.

A memorial service will be held on May 20 at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, followed by a celebration of her full and happy life at the Ledgeview Park in Lake George. The time of the services will be announced in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bay Ridge Squad, 1109 Ridge Road, Queensbury, NY 12804.

She will live in our hearts forever.

Acts 2:21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (NIV)
