Elly Simone Mende, 87, passed away with loved ones, Penny, David, Alison, and Anthony, by her side Thursday, October 2, 2025.

Born February 8, 1938 in Liege, Belgium she was the daughter of Carlos and Edith Birenzweig (Voget).

Elly attended school in Belgium before coming to the United States.

On March 18, 1973 Elly married the love of her life, Curt Joseph Mende, they spent many years together and cherished every moment.

Elly owned a prominent knitting shop for 42 years in Montclair, New Jersey.

There were many things that Elly loved to do, primarily she enjoyed knitting and reading.

In addition to her parents, Elly was predeceased by her beloved husband, Curt Joseph Mende.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Penny (David) Kovacs of Queensbury, NY, Gail (William) Swartzlander of Lewisburg, PA; grandchildren, Alison (Anthony) Strouse of Queensbury, NY, Joel Craig of Florida; and great-grandchild, Elena Strouse of Queensbury, NY.

A celebration of life will be held for family and close friends.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the Home of the Good Shepherd in Moreau where Elly resided for the last 21 months.
