Obituary

GLENS FALLS -- Elmer "Chips" C. Verry, 91, of Glens Falls, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at home with his loving family by his side.

Chips was born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 15, 1922, the oldest son of Edwin and Mildred (Carpenter) Verry.

He grew up in Cranston, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married his first wife, Dallas Elsbree, in 1945. Over the years, he worked for several businesses; his last position in Rhode Island was as sexton of Grace Episcopal Church, Providence.

In 1980, Chips married his second wife, Beatrice "Bea" Frost, and they moved to Florida where they worked together as a team, most notably operating a home care center for mentally-challenged men.

In 1992 they moved to Glens Falls to be closer to Bea's daughter, Beverly, husband, Jake and their granddaughters, Kealy and Tegan Whiting. In his retirement Chips enjoyed woodworking, especially crafting large, ornate clocks and other curios in his shop. For many years he was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Glens Falls. He was part of a group of hardworking men who maintained the church, affectionately known as the "Cellar Rats". He loved reading the newspaper and was always up-to-date on any news regarding Glens Falls. Chips and his wife liked to travel and took many motor trips together. He enjoyed a good joke and could tell a great yarn. His laughter and stories will be sorely missed.

Along with his beloved wife Bea, Chips is survived by his brother, Stanley Verry of Virginia; son Larry Verry and wife Joyce of Rhode Island; son, Wayne Verry and wife, Rita, of Alabama; stepdaughter, Beverly Whiting and husband, Ken, of Glens Falls; stepson, Stephen Warren and wife, Patrice, of Connecticut; stepson, Clifton Warren and wife, Laurie, of Washington state; stepson, Bruce Warren of Virginia; eleven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19th at noon, 123 Upper Platt Street, Glens Falls, N.Y. A small luncheon will follow the service.

Condolences may be mailed to Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, or e-mailed through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.
