Obituary

ENID ANN MASTRIANNI, age 62, died peacefully in her home after a long illness in Glens Falls, NY surrounded by friends and family on December 3, 2024.  Born in Niskayuna, NY, she was the first child of Joseph and Miriam Hallenbeck Mastrianni.  Enid was five feet of fierce resistance to inequity and injustice, a tireless champion for those less fortunate.  She was a gifted writer with strong opinions, a sharp wit and a vast vocabulary.

Enid graduated from Niskayuna High School in 1980, received her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 1984.  She earned her MS from the New School for Social Research in Manhattan in Political Science and Feminist Theory. Enid was a lifelong activist and supporter of women's issues having worked or volunteered in many rights organizations including Welfare Warriors and Get Your Girl On. She was the organizer and Spokesperson for the 2016 Women's March in Glens Falls and a tireless supporter and fundraiser for Planned Parenthood.

While working to grow consciousness everywhere, she also worked toward greening her community locally.  Enid was a member of the Glens Falls Tree Commission for 15 years and in 2009 founded and continuously oversaw the Glens Falls Community Garden.  Enid enjoyed collecting and selling antiques privately and in the shop she ran for years in Glenwood Manor. She had excellent taste, a keen artistic eye and was able to recognize beauty in objects overlooked by others, including a rare Chinese porcelain bowl from the Song Dynasty which she sold through Sotheby's in New York, assuring her financial independence.

A capable and curious traveler, she lived in New York City, England, San Francisco and New Zealand. She also traveled extensively throughout her lifetime, taking interest in local historical sites related to the Underground Railroad and the Erie Canal and far-flung locations such as Trinidad, where she operated a restaurant.  Enid was an accomplished skier and a fanatic birder, excitedly pointing out falcons slashing across the Glens Falls sky to casual viewers.  Always interested in new opinions and unconventional outlooks, Enid delighted in meeting and talking with others, including the frequent Airbnb guests who rented a studio from her.

Enid is survived by her longtime partner, musician Hui Cox of Glens Falls; her mother, Miriam Hallenbeck Mastrianni; brothers, Joseph and James Mastrianni all of Saratoga Springs; and her beloved nieces, Martha, Grace, Lucy, and Marin Mastrianni.  She is also survived by the many friends she made throughout her lifetime, a fantastic and supportive group of intellectuals, artists, and independent thinkers, many of whom have traveled to see her in recent months, reinforcing the impact she has had on us all.

True to Enid's commitment to women's advocacy, equality and education, before her death, she endowed a scholarship for single mothers enrolled in Adirondack Community College and has provided a generous donation to the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region.

A memorial service for Enid will be held at the Crandall Library,  251 Glens St., Glen Falls, NY from 2p.m. till 4 p.m. on January 11, 2025 . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Library via their website .
