Obituary

GLENS FALLS -- Ethel L. (Monroe) Cook, 95, passed away on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014 at The Pines at Gens Falls.

Born Jan. 19, 1919 at the family homestead on Truesdale Hill Rd. in Lake George, she was the daughter of the late Byron and Lucretia (Dutcher) Monroe.

Ethel was a 1937 graduate of Warrensburg Central School.

Ethel married Chester Cook of North Adams, Mass. They lived on Truesdale Hill Rd. and shared 33 years together until Chet passed away March 13, 1981.

During WWII, she worked for General Electric in Schenectady, then at the Warrensburg Shirt Factory, the Embassy Shirt Factory, and the Troy Guild Shirt Factory, from which she retired in 1986.

She was an avid bowler for over 20 years and won many trophies. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, and most of all, cooking and baking for her family.

Besides her parents and her husband, Ethel was predeceased by two sisters, Lela Dorrance and Letha Dunn, two brothers, Malcolm and Leon Monroe, and two sisters-in-law, Elda Monroe and Doris Cook.

Survivors include her only daughter, Debra Manell and husband, Jim, of Glens Falls; her only grandchild, Brienne Brown and husband, Jason, and their daughter, Landry Brown, all of Peru, N.Y.; her sister, Dorcas Baker of Queensbury; her brother, Bruce Monroe of Dayton, Maine; her sister-in-law, Ursula "Sue" Monroe of Warrensburg; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. at the North Caldwell Cemetery in Lake George.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ethel's memory to a charity of one's choice.
