Obituary

WARRENSBURG -- Gene W. Mundell, 85, of Warrensburg, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Albany Medical Center with family by his side after injuries sustained in an automobile accident three weeks prior.

Born November 2, 1930 in Huron, South Dakota, he was the son of the late F.E. Mundell and Ada (Boortz) Mundell.

He graduated from Watertown High School, South Dakota and attended the University of Denver School of Art. Gene served in the US Navy 1950-1954 with the helicopter squadron and had active duty in the Korean War. After college, Gene had various art studios in locations which included Morrison, Colorado, Denver, Colorado, and Lake George, New York.

Gene was a self-employed artist/sculptor in his business 'Dept. of Mundell' in Lake George, New York. He devoted many years to the restoration of buildings and offices which included the New York State Senate Chamber and Lt. Governor's Office, Cohoes Music Hall, St. Agnes Church in Cohoes, St. John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady, Oswego City Hall, the Legislative Office in Nashville, Tennessee, Albany Boys Academy, and many other restoration jobs, often using gold leaf and/or fiberglass. Many of his fiberglass sculptures can be found at Six Flags Great Escape Theme Park and Goony Golf, and the original Time Town spacemen which are now at Magic Forest in Lake George. He was most recently the creator of Old Tin Stuff, artwork made out of old tin ceilings.

Gene was a former president of the Lake George Winter Carnival for four years, and was known for making many unique ice sculptures on the lake.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by and his four brothers Jack, Johnny, Jim, and Robert Mundell.

Survivors include Caroline Mundell; son, Scott F. Mundell and his wife, Diane of Queensbury; daughter, Shawn Sontag and her husband, Fred of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son, Heath Mundell and his wife, Kate of Lake George; son, Joshua Mundell and his wife, Melissa of Bloomington, IN; and Leonore Ringer of Lake George. Grandchildren include Emily (Mundell) Caves and husband, Matthew Caves of Springbrook, Wisconsin, Matthew Mundell of Queensbury, Jack Mundell and Krista of Bloomington, Indiana, and Chloe May Mundell and Aidan of Lake George, New York.

Calling hours will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, August 8 at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY, 12804.

A memorial service will follow at 12 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bill Davidson, pastor of Church of the King, officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

Family suggests memorial donations be made to the charity of their choice in lieu of flowers.
