Chestertown --- Harold L. Vermeulen, 93, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2021 at his home with his family by his side.
Born June 9, 1928, in Nyack, N.Y. he was the son of Harold W. and Margaret A. (Weber) Vermeulen.
Harold graduated from Nyack High School and enlisted in the United States Army in October 1950, serving until his honorable discharge in September 1952. Harold was a member of many organizations, including the Korean War Veterans Association Adirondack Chapter No. 60, New York Central Historical Society, Combat Infantrymen's Association, American Legion Albany Post No. 0001, American Federation of Government Employees, as well as a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars NYS Post No. 15033.
After serving his country Harold worked for D&H Railway in Albany, N.Y. and the Federal Department of Transportation as a Track Safety Inspector in Cambridge, Mass. and Albany, N.Y.
He married Valerie A. Moore on December 24, 1957. They spent many years together raising their son, David and daughter, Barbara.
Harold enjoyed wood-working, gardening, and tending to his plants.
In addition to his parents, Harold was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, John and Elizabeth Weber and his paternal grandparents, David and Frances Vermeulen.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Valerie Vermeulen; children, David A. Vermeulen Sr. of Chestertown, and Barbara R. Vermeulen of Queensbury; grandchildren, Jeremy C. Elms, David A. Vermeulen Jr., and Renee Vermeulen; great-grandchildren, Britney Daniels and Owen Vermeulen; and his toy fox terrier, Mini; also three cousins.
A graveside ceremony with military honors will be held Friday, October 1, at 10 a.m. at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville.
