SOUTH GLENS FALLS --- James "Jim" F. Porter, 79, of South Glens Falls, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital, Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018.
Born July 22, 1939 in Fort Edward, he was the son of Ernest and Jessie (Haviland) Porter.
In his early years, he managed Delong's Dairy Bar, where he developed a fondness for cooking. Jim was in the Army National Guard. He worked for the Division of the Military and Naval Affairs. He retired from his military career as Lieutenant Colonel. In his retirement, he enjoyed selling real estate for Berkshire Hathaway.
Jim was a people person. He loved a good round of golf, telling stories, and making people laugh with his jokes. He treasured his friends and family and could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. He took a pleasure in being active in the community and was an active member of the Masons. Jim always volunteered to cook for many organizations.
In addition to his parents, Jim is predeceased by a brother, Ernest Porter; and a sister, Barbara (Porter) Nichols.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Patricia Porter of South Glens Falls; his daughter, Robyn (Joe) Scotland of Troy; grandchildren, Brighton Scotland, Diego Scotland, and Basil Scotland; sister, Mary (Jon) Davis; brother, John (Edie) Porter; sister-in-law, Susan Wiswall Socha; brother-in-law, Thomas Wiswall; also several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his therapy dog, Becky.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation Thursday, October 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804. Queensbury Masonic Lodge No. 121 Free and Accepted Masons will perform service at 6:30 p.m.
A graveside service with military honors will take place at the convenience of the family.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Albany Medical Center, Glens Falls Hospital, and Ellis Hospital for their professional care during this difficult time.
