Obituary

QUEENSBURY---Jane (Martin) McCabe, aged 100, died on January 13, 2021, after a full and active life, far travels, and lots of fun.

Born in Portland, Maine, to Mary (Calkin) and Preston Martin, she graduated from Whitesboro (NY) High School, where her father was principal. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Woman's College of New Haven, then moved to New York City where she worked for Harcourt. She met Merchant Mariner Leroy McCabe at a USO dance, and they married, moving to Lily, PA, where they started their family. They then moved to Chester, PA, where Jane worked for Crozier Theological Seminary, and for Penn Morton College, now Widener University.

Jane and her youngest daughter moved to Glens Falls in 1970. She worked for Heber Court Reporting Service, and then became a travel agent for Heber Travel. This began her own love and pursuit of travel.

Jane traveled around the world, often with Elderhostel, and often accompanied by her dear friend Tekla Michaud. She greatly enjoyed several trips to England and Wales, sometimes with her friend Debby Reed. She traveled many times by train across the country to visit her children on the West Coast.

Upon retirement from Heber Travel, Jane threw herself into volunteer work, receiving in 1988 the Bartlett Award for the Most Outstanding Volunteer through RSVP. She was also a longtime, much-loved volunteer for the Feeder Canal Alliance.

Unable to be idle for long, she also began doing office work for Higgs and Crayford, and eventually for the Layden law firm, from which she -- again, and for the last time -- retired at age 90.

When not traveling, she enjoyed walks in nature or around her Sherman Avenue neighborhood, line dancing, reading, playing the piano, getting together with friends and family, and was always up for an adventure...and chocolate. Even in her 90s, she was a fierce croquet player.

For some years a congregant at Kingsbury Baptist Church while her friend David Higgs was pastor, she also enjoyed lively Bible study classes with pastor Sheldon Hurst.

She lived for the last several years at Countryside Adult Home, where she was known for her luck at Bingo and UNO, and her "Pretty Jane from Maine" poem. She spent part of the last year at the Warren Center.

She is survived by her children Michael (Terry) McCabe of Queensbury, Marty McCabe of Seattle, WA, Mary Joyce of Redmond, OR, Marilyn McCabe (Bob Frawley) of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren Michael (Noriko Masaki) Joyce of Singapore, Amanda Joyce (Steve Shack) of Los Angeles, CA, and Emily (Andrew) McCarthy of Albany; and great grandson Remy.

Her smile, ready laugh, and love of life will be missed.

Condolences may be sent directly to Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, or through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.
