Obituary

QUEENSBURY --- Joan Goetz Hughes, 85, died Saturday, April 10, 2021, at home with her loving husband by her side.

She was born July 31, 1935 in Glens Falls, New York, the daughter of John J. Goetz and Mildred E. (Wiley) Goetz.

She grew up in Glens Falls and spent summers at the family cottage on Assembly Point on Lake George. She was a graduate of Glens Falls High School and Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Mrs. Hughes was married to James E. Hughes on July 30, 1955. She is survived by her husband, one son, J. Michael Hughes (of Troy, NY); one daughter, Lisa C. (Hughes) Macaluso and her husband David (of Grand Island, NY); and three granddaughters, Jordan (Hughes) Rider (of Accord, NY), Dr. Taylor Hughes (of Burlington, VT), and Clarissa Macaluso (of Grand Island, NY); her sister, Lois M. (Goetz) Carter and husband Dr. Willard Carter (of Syracuse, NY); her brother, George W. Goetz and his wife Karen (of Venice, FL); and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by her Father, Mother, and one brother (John R. Goetz).

Mrs. Hughes worked for the New York Telephone Company in Glens Falls and in the admissions office of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. She worked on Real Estate as a sales agent for Savard Realty, Fitzgerald Realty, and Prudential Realty. She was also very active in volunteer work.

Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Glens Falls Board of Education for 25 years, serving many years as President. She represented the upstate New York Schools on the Federal Relations Committee of the Boards Association for new school board members.

She was a member of the Zonta Club, The Glens Falls League of Women Voters, the Glens Falls Hospital Guild, and The Glens Falls City School District Quarter Century Club. She was a director of the Adirondack Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Volunteer Action Center, LARAC, The Lake George Opera Festival, and The Glens Falls Symphony. Also, she was an Elder and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, NY.

Mrs. Hughes especially enjoyed attending performances of Symphonies, the Opera, band music, and live theater with her husband. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She especially loved playing contract bridge with her friends in several bridge clubs, (may all of you bid and make many slams!).

Calling hours will take place Friday, April 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 17, at 9 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, with the Rev. Ken Applegate, pastor, officiating.

A private graveside ceremony will take place at Pine View Cemetery.
