John Paul
Fisher
Nov 3, 1922 — Apr 28, 2017
Free at last. Free at last. Thank god Almighty he's free at last. RIP J. Paul Fisher 11/3/22 – 4/28/17
GLENS FALLS --- Paul was born November 3, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pa. to William McKinley Fisher and Pauline Edith (Lindsay) Fisher. When Paul was two years old, the family relocated to the Glens Falls area where "Bill" acquired a job tuning and repairing pianos.
Paul attended Glens Falls and South Glens Falls Schools, graduating in 1941 from South High. At the outbreak of WWII, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was assigned to Marine Bomber Squadron 611. He often spoke of being delayed in Hawaii while the rest of the task force went to the Philippines. His ship's captain was able to attach himself to other groups and scavenged supplies so that they eventually made it to Mindanao.
After his discharge in 1945, dad returned home to Glens Falls. He worked at various jobs while attending Skidmore extension on the GI bill. He graduated in 1950.
On October 12, 1946, he married Phyllis Anne Barber, daughter of William and Celia Barber.
Upon graduation, dad took his degree in chemistry to the family business, The M. Ames Chemical Works. He worked in the business for 30 years until it was sold to GAF, (and later Ames Goldsmith.)
After leaving GAF he worked at Meads Nursery until his retirement.
Paul was committed to his family, his church, to service in the community and to enjoyment of the outdoors. As part of his commitment to his church Dad served as Scoutmaster of Troop 1 BSA. Served as a deacon, trustee and moderator of the congregation. In the 1960's he became a lay preacher. He preached in many small churches from Kingston to Plattsburgh.
He was a dedicated Kiwanian and a member of the board of the Salvation Army. Representing both, he took his sons downtown to ring the bell at Christmas.
In his retirement dad took up wood carving. Many of us have small birds that he carved gracing our mantles. At the same time, he built an intricate train layout with handmade bridges and buildings. He also fixed canoes and found lots of time to be with his grandchildren.
In 1993, (after Dave met Donna) Paul moved into the farmhouse on Rt. 149. In 2002, the farm burned and he moved to Cronin High Rise. He spent many happy years in his apartment there. (Thanks Bob Doug and Cherie)
Left to try to live up to his example are sons, David (Donna), Peter (Valerie); grandchildren, David, Jessica, Linday, Tristian, Robert, and PJ; also, very well loved nephews, George, Greg, Glenn Bristol, and William Clark; and niece Carol Clark.
Paul was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Phyllis; his sister, Laura (Betty) Bristol; and niece, Betsy Bristol.
Special thanks go to Cherie Coe CNP of Irongate, and our wonderful friend, Melody.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of June 10 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to The First Baptist Church of Glens Falls, 100 Maple St, Glens Falls, NY 12801.
Condolences may be sent directly to the funeral home, or through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.
