Obituary

QUEENSBURY---John VanHatten, 44, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Albany Medical Center after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born on August 13, 1980, in Utica, New York, John lived a life filled with love, dedication, and passion for his family and community.

A graduate of Queensbury High School in 1998, John continued his education at Northeastern University and the University at Albany, earning his Bachelor's degree in 2002. He worked for Progressive Insurance as an insurance adjuster and took pride in mentoring new employees and building relationships with people along the way.

Above all else, John was a devoted husband to Amanda VanHatten and a loving father to Sophie and Jensen VanHatten. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and cherished every moment spent supporting them. Whether coaching on the ice or cheering from the sidelines at their sporting events, John found true joy in being present for his children's milestones.

John's passion for hockey extended beyond being a spectator—he was an enthusiastic coach who instilled a love for the game in his players. His dedication to teaching went beyond strategy; he fostered teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship in every young athlete he mentored. His impact on the Adirondack Youth Hockey Association and the Adirondack Northstars will be remembered by many.

When not at the rink or field, John embraced life's simple pleasures. He was an avid mountain biker who found solace on rugged trails and enjoyed hiking through the woods with his family. On weekends free from sports commitments, he could often be found relaxing on Lake George or perfecting his skills as a grill master in his backyard—his brisket was legendary among family and friends.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Raymond and Marion VanHatten, as well as Donald and Helen Lathers.

John is survived by his wife, Amanda; their children, Sophie and Jensen; his parents, Gary and Donna VanHatten; and his brothers, Scott and David VanHatten.
