Obituary

LAKE GEORGE – John Jonas Walker, 82, of State Route 149, went to the arms of the Lord on Friday, September 16, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

Born August 23, 1934 in Elizabethtown, he was the son of Paige R. and Merle G. Walker.

John graduated from Westport High School where he lettered in multiple varsity sports, as well as earned a degree in combat engineering in the Army.

On June 27, 1954, John married the love of his life Joan M. Swinton at Ticonderoga Methodist Church. Johnnie and Joannie celebrated 62 wonderful years together.

John was drafted into the United States Army February 12, 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1959. He chose to keep serving his country by joining the National Guard, serving until 1964.

John had a long career in the heavy equipment industry before starting his own business "Walker Logging Supply" in his home in 1982, side-by-side with his wife, Joan until their retirement.

John was a dedicated member of Harrisena Community Church in so many ways, including serving as a trustee and singing in the choir. He could often be found cooking breakfast for the men's club, preparing corn at the church BBQ, or helping out the youth fellowship. Some of his other enjoyments included fishing, camping and canoeing with is son, gardening, boating on Lake George with his family, skiing, and telling stories. Wherever he went he always knew someone. Above all John loved spending time with his 5 grandchildren out on the lake, in the garden, and at many family gatherings.

In addition to his parents and grandparents, John was predeceased by his sister, Judith W. Lawrence.

Those left to cherish his memory are his two children: Brian (Anne) Walker of Queensbury, and Michele Walker of Lake George; five grandchildren, Ashley and Jonathan Staunches, both of Lake George, and Catherine, Matthew, and Evelyn Walker all of Queensbury; a brother-in-law, Russell Lawrence Sr. of Colonie; also several nieces, nephews, and cousins, with special mention of Christy (Bill) Clairmont of Hudson Falls, Russell "Chipper" (Christine) Lawrence of Clifton Park, and Paige (Debbie) Lawrence of Hudson Falls; and a brother-in-law, Charles (Betty) Swinton of Ticonderoga and his children, Kelly LaFrance and Charles Swinton.

Calling hours will take place Friday, September 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.

A memorial service, with military honors, will be held Saturday, September 24, at 3 p.m. at Harrisena Community Church, with the Rev. Lamont Robinson, pastor, officiating.

A reception will immediately follow services at the church in Robinson Hall.

A special thank you to Pop's family on "G" Wing at Fort Hudson Nursing home. Thank you for taking good care of him, and for the all the support given to his family.
