Obituary

ALBANY – Joseph P. Fiore, 92, departed this life on Tuesday morning of May 2, 2015 at Albany County Nursing Home where he had been a patient since August, 2012. He was born in Glens Falls to Virginia (Arienzo) and Peter Fiore on New Year's Eve 1922.

He attended St. Mary's Academy and while there became a member of the New York National Guard in 1939. In 1940 the National Guard was federalized but he was discharged and could not serve as he was under age. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and served until 1945 in the Pacific and was awarded two purple hearts, having been wounded twice in Saipan and the Mariana Islands.

Upon return to Glens Falls he operated Fiore's Liquor Store for years and was on the Warren Country Board of Supervisors. While on the board he was proud of the fact that his vote counted in establishing the health camp on Gurney Lane, Adirondack Community College where he served on the first Board of Trustees, building of the new municipal center, the Northway and the East-West bypass (Quaker Road).

He later became Director of the Warren County Veterans Service Agency for 11 years, from which he retired. He was responsible for helping to bring about a van to transport veterans to and from the VA Hospital in Albany.

Over the years he was a member of many civic organizations as well as a life member of many veterans organizations. He was extremely proud of the fact that he was the founder of Memorial Detachment No. 2, Marine Corps League. He recruited other Marine friends and together they were granted a charter in 1946 and he became the first Commandant. He served in many capacities in the Detachment and was active up to the time he went to the nursing home. He was very active in the Detachment and was active up to the time he went to the nursing home. He was very active in the Detachment's Toys for Tots program and wanted to make sure assistance was given to every family who needed it. He spent years fundraising so that the Detachment would have its own quarters and searched for someone to take his place. He found that person in Tom Golden. He was thrilled to see the dream of a building come to fruition under the guidance of his successor.

Joe was always very civic minded and for years organized the Memorial Day Parade in Glens Falls. He also served as Chairman of Warren County Days at the World's Fair in New York City.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Mary Luciano.
He leaves behind his wife Elaine, his brother Rev. Peter Fiore, his five children, Virginia Kavanaugh, Susan Fiore, Patrick Fiore, Joan Flanagan and Ellen Fiore, two stepchildren, Sharon Neble and Stephen Hiter. He also leaves several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
