Obituary

LAKE GOERGE – Karen Marcia Filkins-Sanders, age 50, of Lake George, NY and formerly of Ravenna, OH, was promoted to glory Saturday, June 6th, following a fatal accident in Saratoga Springs, NY. She graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1983. She earned her Associates degree from Hudson Valley Community College. She went on to receive her B.S. in Health Services and her M.S. in Gerontology from Kent State University. She belonged to, and was the Chapter President of, Sigma Phi Omega.

She was employed as a program director at Kent State University, Salem Campus, then as the director of Continuing Professional Education at NEOUCOM in Rootstown, OH, and as the Director for Aging Initiatives at Cuyahoga Community College in Highland Hills, OH.

She was a soldier (member) of The Salvation Army in DuBois, PA, and Glens Falls, NY, serving as the Missionary Sgt. and Website Sgt. for the DuBois Corps and a caseworker for the Glens Falls Corps. She co-taught the Adult Sunday School class and worked part-time as a care provider at the Haynes House of Hope. She will be greatly missed by her church family as well as the community she served.

She wanted to make a difference in the world for God. She had a deep love for her family and friends, an abiding desire to help others, and devoted much of her life to taking in rescue cats and dogs. She was a nature lover, an avid reader who enjoyed target shooting, garden gnomes, cartoons, and science-fiction.

She is predeceased by her parents, Morgan and Hazel Filkins, infant sister Kathleen, and brother Kevin.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Michael Sanders; son Brendan Sanders; and daughter Bronwyn (Winnie) Sanders, all of Ravenna, OH; and her beloved pug, Muggsy, of Lake George, NY.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury.

A Celebration of Life service will immediately follow and be conducted by Major David Dean, pastor of The Salvation Army.
