Karen Gerstenzang
Meltzer
Nov 15, 1935 — Nov 18, 2021
BRANT LAKE --- The world has lost one of its wisest, most generous, and dignified women. On November 18th, 2021, Karen Gertenzang Meltzer passed away peacefully in her favorite spot overlooking her beloved Brant Lake with family and friends by her side. She was 86 years old.
Karen was a devoted wife to her husband of 62 years, Laurence Meltzer, loving mother to Lorayne Meltzer (married to Ed Boyer) and Robert B. Meltzer, and loving grandmother of Merrin, Brock and Marlee Meltzer, and Dylan and Maya Barnes.
Born in New York City in 1935 to Robert and Patricia Brock Gerstenzang, she was a graduate of Fieldston High School and Scripps College. Karen was a Director of Brant Lake Camp beginning in 1962, the camp her father founded in 1916, where she will always be loved and remembered for her grace, kindness, and dedication to the camp. She was deeply respected for her contributions to the camping community. She was involved in NY State camp director activities such as President of New York State Camp Directors Association, Vice President of New York State chapter of the American Camping Association, and President of Camp Vacamas. Later she was more involved in Adirondack activities including membership on the Board of Directors of the Adirondack Council, Adirondack Experience, and the Brant Lake Association.
Those who knew her well, and there are many, know that she lived to make other people's lives more wonderful. The world is simply a better place because she was in it. Karen will be missed by all who knew her.
