Obituary

Margaret Mary Swain passed away peacefully in her Queensbury, NY home on October 21, 2023. Born in Barre, VT on May 10, 1937, to Margaret and Clarence Carpenter, Margaret (Marge to her many close friends) was the youngest of three siblings.

Marge graduated from the University of Vermont in 1959 with a degree in elementary education. While teaching in North Creek, NY (her first job), she met her first husband, Donald Swain (the father of her five children).

She was a successful businesswoman in the town of Peru, NY until she retired at 78. For over four decades, she owned and operated Swain's Wine & Liquor Store, where she was known and cherished by the local townspeople.

An accomplished bowler, Marge won numerous awards and accolades over the years for her amazing skill, even after battling breast cancer at the age of 72.

Marge had a generous spirit, providing donations from her shop for fundraisers, financially assisting those in need, and excelling at the art of gift-giving.

In her senior apartment where she made lasting friendships, she was known for being a bit of a card shark, for enjoying the occasional afternoon adult beverage with friends, and making a mean 7-layer dip.

Marge kept her sense of humor right until the very end as each of her children cared for her, ensuring a peaceful and pain-free passing.

She is survived by her five loving children and their spouses; Diana and Robert Petrillo, Patricia and Robert McGowen, Mathew Swain, Bill and Crystal Swain, John and Elaine Swain; her ten grandchildren; Daniel and Grace Petrillo, Bethany McGowen, Elijah and Emmett Swain, Ethan LaPier, Tia Hall, Nathan Austin, and Andrew and Alex Swain; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was predeceased by her brother, William Carpenter and his wife, Daisy and her sister, Constance Reilly and her husband, Lawrence.

A private celebration of her life will be held in her beloved Vermont in the spring of 2024. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to High Peaks Hospice , 1247 Dix Ave, Hudson Falls, NY 12839.

Condolences may be sent directly to Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804, or through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.
