GLENS FALLS --- Marie Elizabeth Corlew, 88, of Glens Falls, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013.
Born July 18, 1924, in West Haven, Connecticut, to Charles and Gertrude (Haverty) Shaw. She graduated from West Haven High School in 1942 and worked at the Security Insurance Company in New Haven, Ct. for 8 years. During WWII, she volunteered as an air raid warden.
She moved to Glens Falls, New York, in 1950 lived with her aunt and began working for the Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company. While residing with her aunt, she met the boy next door, Mickey Corlew.
Marie married Mickey on January 27, 1951. Marie left the bank for a few years to start her family. She then returned to Glens Falls National to work in the Trust Department and after 20 more years of service at the bank, she retired in 1981.
Marie and Mickey lived in Glens Falls and then in North River, NY, for many years. During those years Marie was a member of the Fort Ann Legion Auxillary and the North River Fire Department Auxillary. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls.
Known for her wonderful sense of humor, Marie was willing to try most anything (except mushrooms) and did hunting, boating, snowmobiling, motorcycling and camping. But by far the greatest joys of her life were her three grandchildren, Rob, Chris and Valerie. Over the years she attended every birthday party, soccer, little league and softball game, performance and graduation as Rob, Chris and Val's personal cheerleader. Marie was a devoted wife and mother, loyal employee, true friend and The World's Greatest Gramma, without question.
Besides her parents and husband of 51 years, Marie was predeceased by her brothers Harold Shaw, Fred Shaw and Don Shaw. She was also predeceased by "the sister I never had", her sister-in-law, Mary Corlew.
She is survived by her daughter, Christine Corlew (Elizabeth Hughes) of Clifton Park, NY, daughter, Patricia McGilpin (TJ Manell) of Gansevoort, NY, son, Michael Corlew (Cynthia Corlew) of Hudson Falls, NY; grandchildren, Robert McGilpin of Glens Falls, Christopher McGilpin of Glens Falls, and Valerie McGilpin of Gansevoort; niece, Joan Liberty of South Glens Falls; also several nieces and nephews.
