Stony Creek - Martha Joan Mattson passed away in the early hours of September 8, 2026, in the presence of her children. She was 82 years old and had recently celebrated her birthday on Martha’s Vineyard at the beach with her family. Martha has moved on to join her husband, Steven Mattson Sr.; her two sisters, Carol and Judy; her parents, Herb and Marion; and many other family and friends. She is survived by her children, Steven(Christine), Roy(Allison), Sarah(Jamison), and Deborah; her grandchildren, Steven, Maddy, William, Mili; her pets, Heidi, and Fluffy; many friends and family.

Martha was born on August 31, 1944 and grew up in the Bronx and Ardsley, New York.

Martha was the homecoming queen of her high school class and was voted for prettiest eyes.

She completed Berkeley Secretarial School, and enjoyed working at IBM as a secretary up until her favorite job “Mother”!

Martha married her husband Steve on June 23, 1968. They had 4 children. Martha was a wonderful, loving, nurturing mother to all of them. She encouraged and supported her children in any way possible. She loved them unconditionally. She also showed a mother’s love, whether it be her children’s friends, the families she provided childcare for, or at another job she held as a one on one school aide. She also worked in retail sales after her kids were grown. Being a mother and wife were of utmost importance to her. Martha and Steve were happily married for 54 years before his passing.

Martha’s greatest joy was being a “Nana”! She especially loved her grandchildren, Steven, Maddy, William, and Mili, and had a special relationship with all of them. Her love surrounds them even though she has left this earthly plane.

She loved her time at the beach, lighthouses, butterflies, flowers, and spending time with her family. She loved dancing. Martha and Steve are local legends for their dance moves and difference in stature (she was 5 feet and he was 6’4”). She enjoyed attending church and was faithful to her belief in Christianity. Martha believed in “little miracles”, and wore a signature mustard seed necklace “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, then nothing shall be impossible unto you”. Martha showed her strength and love. She will be missed dearly, but she is always and forever in our hearts.

“And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand”.

There will be a celebration of her life on October 4, 2026 from 12:00pm to 3:00pm, at the Veterans VFW Hall in Brewster, NY (262 Peaceable Hill Rd, Brewster, NY 10509). Anyone who knew Martha is invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, Martha would rather you spend an hour with your mom, dad, or other family you cherish.
