MASSACHUSETTS --- Michael E. Skorput, 74, passed away following a long illness on Saturday, February 10, 2024, with loved ones by his side.
Born July 8, 1949, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, he was the son of Paul P. and Charlotte "Tina" (Hayes) Skorput.
Michael graduated from William's High School in 1967 and went on to study at Berkshire Community College.
He owned and operated The Public Market in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts for over 20 years, and then went on to become the town administrator in New Marlborough, Massachusetts, before retiring to enjoy time with his grandchildren and family. He also loved cooking and making his locally famous homemade sausages.
Michael served in the United States Army from February 5, 1969, until February 4, 1971, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Badge Rifle M14, Sharpshooter Badge Rifle M16, and Good Conduct Medal. Michael transferred to the Army Reserves, serving until 1977. He loved West Stockbridge and was always there for the townspeople. He served as a police officer and then town constable for many years. He was on various town boards, including The Board of Selectman (Chairman for 3 terms), Board of Health, Finance Committee, Hydro & Pollution Committees, Youth Services, Emergency Planning Meeting, Sewer & Water Advisory Council, and Cable TV Committee. He served as a consultant for the veteran's agency and he was also the Veteran's Grave Officer. He was a member of the W.S. Fire Department and an EMT for the rescue squad, member of the Joseph Libardi Post 254 American Legion, member of the W.S. Sportsman's Club, and Boy Scout Troop Leader for Troop #32.
In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by his sister, Dale A. Skorput; and brother-in-law, William Cooper.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Kristany Skorput and her partner, Clint Babcock; step-children, Debbie Piacitelli (John), Bernie Fallon (Isabel), and Jeffrey Fallon (Natasha); grandchildren, Evan Babcock, Ian Babcock, Koty Fallon, Tanner Fallon, and Hunter Fallon; great-granddaughter, Scarlett Fallon; sisters, Paula J. Skorput-Law (Jimmy) and Tina M. Skorput (Paul); brother, Peter A. Skorput (Laura); aunt, Dorothy Hotchkiss; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved dogs, Kaci and Christopher.
Funeral Mass and military honors will be held, Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in West Stockbridge. A Celebration of Michael's Life will follow at the St. Patrick's Parish Center at 11 a.m.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the doctors, nurses and all of the skilled and incredibly kind staff at Glens Falls Hospital.
