Obituary

QUEENSBURY — Philip John Schwartz died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Sept. 19, 2018, at the age of 87.

Phil is survived by his wife, Connie Schwartz; a daughter, Peggy Axtell of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, her husband, Silas, and their three children Blake, Sarah, and Grace; a daughter, Katie of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, husband, Nicolaus Bloom and two daughters, Maya and Hannah; a son, Matthew of Denver, Colorado; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth of Marblehead, Massachusetts and husband Marwan Aylouche; and a son, Philip Jr. of Burnt Hills, and his wife Heather and two children, Nolan and Finn McCool. He also leaves behind his loving sister in-law, Marie Schwartz; and many nieces, nephews and their children.

After graduating from Peekskill High School in 1948 he was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War. He then graduated from Iona Collage with a bachelor's degree and a master's in Education. He taught middle school math and science for 30 years in the Mohopac school system. Throughout that time, Phil was very active in the New York State Teacher's Union and for many years served as president of the teacher's association in Mahopac. Phil was beloved by the students and his peers and worked tirelessly in all aspects of education.

All who knew Phil, knew of his passion for golfing and skiing. He was a member of the Kingsbury Golf Club for 24 years and was a season pass holder at Gore Mountain, skiing at least 30 times a year into his early 80's.

Phil was known to be honest, lighthearted, honorable, gentle and especially kind. He loved to tell stories about his days growing up in Peekskill alongside his life long friends whom he adored. Phil was married to Connie whom he treasured for 53 years, and they raised five children whom he showered with love. He loved his seven beautiful grandchildren, who will bring the best parts of their beloved grandfather out into the world.

Phil follows his father, Edward; his mother, Sarah; his brothers, Bobby and Larry; his sisters, Margie and Virginia.

There will be a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at St. Mary's Church, Warren Street, Glens Falls.
