FORT EDWARD --- Richard "Dick" H. Mickel Sr., 86, passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital with his family by his side.
Born Dec. 15, 1930 in Lake George, he was the son of the late George Mickel and Hazel (Varno).
On Jan. 12, 1949, Dick entered the United States Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War and was honorably discharged March 15, 1953.
For many years, Dick worked at Hunt Lake Timber Sales and at Warren County.
Some of his enjoyments included going for walks and spending time at the Daily Double with a cold Genny that they kept on ice for him. Above all, he loved seeing his great-grandchildren who always brightened his day.

Those left to cherish his memory are his nine children, Kelly (Francis) Vaillancourt of South Glens Falls, Lisa Mickel (Richard O'Leary) of Glens Falls, Richard H. Mickel Jr. of Queensbury, Kevin (Larissa) Mickel of South Glens Falls, Nancy Mickel of Fort Edward, Daniel (Virginia) Mickel Sr. of Fort Miller, Gerrylynn Lapier (Jim Limmer) of South Glens Falls, Donna Varnum of Hadley, and Arlene Downey of Hudson Falls; grandchildren, Christopher, Eric (Courtney), and Brooke Shipley of Glens Falls, Jaylene and Jenna Brown of Glens Falls, Kari (Kevin) Stanford of Saratoga, Kyle Mickel of Fort Edward, Tyrel, K.J. and Aiden Mickel, all of South Glens Falls, Kristy Jean Walkup of Glens Falls, Nicole (Peter) Carolan of Hudson Falls, Daniel Mickel Jr. of Hudson Falls, Leah Mickel of Fort Miller, Mathew Dean of Granville, Kristina McClouth of Lake Luzerne, David Varnum of Hadley, Cindy Lapier of Corinth, Billie Jo Lapier of Argyle, and Sid Lapier of Corinth; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; his sisters, Bonnie Foote of Minerva, and Katherine Whiting of West Glens Falls; special friends, Marty and Roseanne Stalker and all his friends at the Daily Double; also several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Calling hours will take place Friday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.
A funeral service will follow at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Joseph Busch officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Granville.
The honor of pallbearers will be his sons, Richard Mickel Jr., Kevin Mickel and Daniel Mickel Sr., and grandsons, Christopher Shipley and Eric Shipley, and his good friend, Steven Garb.
Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of Dick's life at the Daily Double on South St., following his graveside service.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Glens Falls Hospital ICU and Tower 2 Oncology doctors and staff, and Dr. Fillion's office at Irongate for all their care, compassion, and support.
