QUEENSBURY --- Richard E. Murphy, 81, of Ledgeview Dr., passed away early Tuesday morning, May 3, 2016 at Glens Falls Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born Jan. 21, 1935 in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Joseph and Katherine (Carroll) Murphy.
He attended St. Mary's Academy and Queensbury schools.
On Feb. 13, 1971, Richard married Gwen McQueen at St. Mary's Church in Hudson Falls.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army from Aug. 29, 1955 until his honorable discharge Aug. 28, 1961.
For 44 years, Richard was a dedicated employee of Decora in Ft. Edward, and served over 20 years as President of United Paperworkers International Union Local No. 13.
An avid New York Yankees and Giants fan, Richard enjoyed playing softball for Decora League as well as coaching little league. He also liked camping with his family, and above all loved spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his daughter, Mildred (Al) Maynes; three sisters, Mary Lanoir, Joan O'Malle, and an infant sister, Alice; also six brothers, Tommy, Frank, Donald, Billy, Jack, and James Murphy.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Gwen Murphy; two daughters, Doreen (Mike) Corte, and Susan Ireland; three sons, Richard Murphy II, Howard (Tess) Ireland, and Edward Ireland (companion, Terrie Shaw); former daughter-in-law, Debbie Ireland; several grandchildren include, Ryan Arquette, Meghan Murphy, Heather and Jessica Blevins, Matthew, Tanner, and Tyler Ireland; great-grandchildren, Jaelyn, Ryleigh-Ann, Caitlin, Nathanial, and Aiden; three sisters, Helen Viele, Ann Mosher, and Carol Murphy; a brother, Jerry (Sue) Murphy; also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends and family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 6, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's / St. Paul's Church in Hudson Falls.
Interment, with military honors, will follow at Pine View Cemetery in Queensbury, with bagpipes performed by Gerald Cashion.
