Obituary

GLENS FALLS --- Richard L. Purner, 83, of Mountain View Rd., Glens Falls, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Glens Falls Hospital, following a long battle with cancer.
Born July 7, 1929 in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Walter B. Purner and Genevieve V. (Hart).
When Richard was young, he worked as a paperboy for the city of Glens Falls, and also helped his grandparents take care of Haviland's Cove.
Richard attended St. Alphonsus Church and School in Glens Falls, where he graduated in 1948. He earned his Associates Degree in Business Administration from Utica State University of New York in 1951.
On Jan. 9, 1951, he entered in the U. S. Army, served during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged from the reserves Sept. 11, 1956.
At Continental Ins. Co., Richard met Doris E. Thompson and they were married Labor Day, 1957.
In his younger years, Richard worked for Gideon Putnam Hotel and Glens Falls EMS. While owning and operating the Antiqua Motel in Lake George, Richard also was employed by Hercules Inc., Ciba-Geigy Inc., and Queensbury Hotel.
Richard enjoyed rides on his boat, anything to do with history and listening to music.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by a brother, Walter J. Purner, a niece, Diane L. Purner, a daughter-in-law, Juliann M. (Gough) Purner, a brother-in-law, Burton J. Pagano, and a sister-in-law, Jean E. (Rich) Purner.
Survivors include his daughter, Doreen M. Guyett and her husband, Timothy; a son, Daniel J. Purner; five grandchildren, Wesley T. and Kenneth J. Purner, and Holly M., Kevin J., and Ariel N. Guyett; three sisters, Elizabeth L. Pagano, Mary D. Kexel and her husband, Ronald, and Patricia A. Purner; six brothers, Robert F. Purner, Thomas D. Purner and his wife, Arlin M. (Farr), William B. Purner and his wife, Jean E. (Farr), Paul J. Purner and his wife, Diane C. (Nicholson), Raymond K. Purner and his wife, Priscilla E. (Wheeler), and Francis A. Purner and his wife, Anne M. (Hoffnagle); a sister-in-law, Helen B. (Farnsworth) Purner; also several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
At his request, there will be no calling hours or funeral.
A graveside ceremony, with military honors, will take place Monday, April 22, at 1 p.m. at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Rd., Schuylerville.
