Obituary

QUEENSBURY -- It is with profound and unimaginable sorrow that we mark the passing of our beloved son and brother, Shane Francis Magner. Shane was born on a beautiful, sun-filled evening on the ninth of August, 1985, to Kathleen and Michael Magner in Rutland, Vermont. Tall and thin from his very first day, and accompanied by a head full of the thickest, curliest, most unruly blond hair one could ever imagine, Shane was always the easiest one to spot in a crowd. After spending his first few years amongst his expansive extended family in Vermont, Shane arrived in Queensbury in 1989 along with his parents and younger brother and chief agitator Dustin. He entered Saint Mary's-Saint Alphonsus School on that first day of kindergarten in 1991 and carried in his heart the fond memories and friendships that he made there until his last day. Six years on and after the arrival at Saint Mary's-Saint Alphonsus of his youngest brother and most loyal supporter Jeremy, and the birth of his precious, baby sister Mary Kate, Shane transferred to Queensbury Middle School where his height, speed and athleticism quickly got him noticed. Before long, he was the fellow with the big leg in soccer, the big shot in basketball and the big arm in baseball. High school followed and so did his transition from soccer to cross country running, and with his best friend Kowen Drake at his side, the discovery of every back trail, shortcut, hide-out and beverage stowaway nook between Queensbury School and Rush Pond.

Shane's proudest moment as a Queensbury Spartan came his junior year in the spring of 2003, when he was called upon to pitch five innings of relief in the NYS Class A baseball quarterfinal against Ogdensburg Free Academy. And pitch he did; stranding 11 batters on the base paths and enticing a game-ending flyball in the bottom of the 10 th with the bases-loaded. That same year, Shane was an Empire State Games selection in baseball. He also relished in the sweet victory of defeating arch rival and number 4 state   ranked Class A basketball powerhouse Scotia in the 2004 Section 2 quarterfinal.

After graduating from Queensbury High School in 2004, Shane followed his heart west and attended the University of Dallas where he majored in International Business. Transferring his junior year to Marymount Manhattan College, he graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. Following graduation, Shane returned north to the rivers, lakes and mountain ranges where he felt most at home, comforted by the simple, rugged beauty and tranquility that he found in the Adirondacks alongside his ever-faithful Golden Retriever Rudy.

In June of this year, Shane honored his brother Dustin as Best Man at Dustin's wedding, and in quintessential Shane fashion, delivered as well crafted, heartfelt and comedic toast as has ever been spoken.

Shane's work ethic, focus and preparation allowed him to excel at his chosen career in hospital equipment sales, and at the time of his death was employed by EZ Way, Inc., as a Territory Sales Manager specializing in patient handling equipment.

Shane's love for family and friends was undeniable in its genuineness, and unmistakable in its volume – hugs were his calling card. Yet, he yearned to find a true soul mate with whom he could share his life, raise a brood of towheaded Irish kids and grow old together. Unfortunately, this was not to be. He breathed his last breath where he often ventured to find solace, on a mountain trail near Butler Pond, where he had spent countless hours traversing the terrain with friends and his Rudy.

Save for all of the academic, athletic, professional successes and friendships Shane enjoyed, depression in the depths of his soul was often his companion – and one that he fought valiantly to keep at bay. Sadly, the demons of depression came calling once again, and this time, Shane succumbed to its ghastly clutches. We are heartbroken. But we are also comforted in our faith, knowing that the hand of God will lift Shane up into His eternal kingdom. Rest peacefully, son – one day we will all be together again.

Shane is survived by his parents, Kathleen and Michael Magner of Queensbury. His Brother Dustin and sister-in-law Valerie (Valenti) of Hollywood, Florida.
