Obituary

QUEENSBURY --- Shirley Myers Smith, 89, formerly of Whispering Pines, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Fort Hudson Nursing Center.

Born Aug. 1, 1925 in Chestertown, N.Y., she was the daughter of Burton and Myrtle (Duell) Myers.

She was a graduate of Chestertown Central School, Class of 1944.

She married Edwin J. Smith of Horicon, N.Y. on May 20, 1944 in N.Y.C., prior to his deployment to Europe during World War II.

Raised Episcopal, Shirley converted to Catholicism in the 1980's while she and Edwin were parishioners of the Catholic Church of the Epiphany in Port Orange, Fla. They had moved to the Daytona, Fla. area in the 1980's, remaining there until their move to Queensbury, N.Y. in 2005, prior to Edwin's passing. While in Florida, she and Edwin were active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Also during the years that they spent in Florida, they spent their summers in Alexandria Bay, N.Y. working and spending time with their immediate family. Later, they spent a few summers in Waddington, N.Y. with family.

Shirley was a former member of the Chestertown, N.Y. American Legion Auxiliary for many years prior to their move to Florida. Shirley was a longtime American Red Cross blood donor and a volunteer for the Blood Donor Program.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edwin, in 2005, and daughter-in-law, Valerie Smith, in 2012.

Those left to cherish her memory are four sons, Dana (Louise) Smith of Waddington, N.Y. and Oldsmar, Fla., Dale Smith of Queensbury, N.Y., Donald (Saranja) Smith of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Dean (Katrinka) Smith of Redwood, N.Y.; three grandchildren; one step-grandson; and three great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will take place Friday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to noon at Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.

A memorial service will follow at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Joseph Busch, pastor of Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation, officiating.

Interment will follow at Pine View Cemetery, Quaker Rd., Queensbury.
