William Burton
Fosbrook
May 6, 1945 — Apr 9, 2017
GLEN LAKE --- William B. Fosbrook, 71, of Glen Lake passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness.
Born May 6, 1945 in Glens Falls, he was the son of Leonard and Dorothy Fosbrook. His parents purchased the property on Glen Lake when Bill was about five years old and he never left.
He attended Lake George School and received his diploma while serving in the U.S. Navy.
Bill worked as a self-employed logger and truck driver for many years before becoming the owner of Springer Waste Management. The business was sold to a major national firm, and Bill settled into semi-retirement that included more time for flying, assisting with the expansion projects at the Hudson Falls Fish and Game Club and visiting friends on his daily "tour" as he called it. In his spare time, he became an accomplished clay target shooter, waterfowl hunter, and spent many hours restoring Triumph, Norton, and BSA motorcycles.
Bill was an accomplished float plane pilot who took many trips to the remote areas of Quebec. Shefferville, Quebec, west to James Bay, and the many lakes and rivers in between, were some of his favorite destinations. These adventures became a part of his accomplished skills as a bush pilot, something Bill was very proud of. They also allowed him to fish remote wilderness waters for trophy Speckled Trout, and he always had the knack of finding the big one.
For many years, Bills home away from home was the Dumoine River Rod and Gun Club in western Quebec. He spent many days fishing the club's pristine waters for trout, walleye, and northern pike, and taking guests to the club always added to his pleasure. Bill was an avid hunter and took great pleasure in pursuing the woodcock and grouse that inhabited the areas around the camp.
Bill was very generous with his flying skills and donated time at fly-ins, helping new pilots with their flying skills, and introducing many new pilots to the incredible challenge of float plane flying.
Bill was a self-taught mechanic who always found a way to fix what was needed. From diesel engines to the most intricate parts on his plane, he would find a way to carefully repair them. He was most proud of rebuilding his Piper Cub, including the fabric recovering of the entire fuselage. He finished the project, and the plane looked and ran better than new.
In his later years, Bill was most proud of his garden. He loved to brag to anyone who would listen about his six foot tomato plants. He also enjoyed helping to can his vegetables and loved to be able to just reach up on a shelf and have his homegrown veggies.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Anita, his stepchildren, Amanda DeLaTorre and her husband, Sergio, and Aaron Koch, a cousin, Leonard Fosbrook and his family, and his in-laws in Michigan. Bill never had children of his own, and so also leaves behind his dear friends, George and Caroline Gedney and their children Will Gedney, Emily Gedney, and Stephen Gedney. He enjoyed their ballgames, family dinners, Halloween candy, hunting and fishing trips, and imparting advice such as "always work hard and stay out of trouble".
Per Bills request, there are no services.
In loving memory of Bill, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105, SPCA of Upstate New York, 588 Queensbury Ave., Queensbury, NY 12804, or a charity of one's choice.
