William L.
Green
Dec 13, 1932 — Sep 3, 2017
QUEENSBURY -- William L. Green, 84, of Queensbury, New York left his earthly life peacefully on Sunday, September 3, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Born December 13, 1932 in Albany, New York, he was the son of Reno W. Green and Frances (Martin) Green and brother to Robert R. W. Green.
Raised in Delmar, New York, his beloved homestead, he graduated from Bethlehem Central High School, Class of 1951, where he was a four-letter athlete. He played a major role on the team that captured the Eastern Conference track and field title, high- jumping his way to 5' 7-1/4", in stocking feet, as a Freshman. He continued to excel in all sports and received a football scholarship to St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he spent four happy years, graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. From there he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country for two years at Fort Niagara. During his service he again demonstrated his athletic prowess, this time in basketball, traveling throughout the northeast with his team, even playing at Madison Square Garden against the Harlem Globetrotters. His love of the game never diminished and until age 80 he could be found treading the boards with vigor at the Glens Falls YMCA.
Upon entering the workforce, Bill took a job with Hartford Insurance in Albany where a certain co-worker stole his heart. Mary Ann McDaniel and William L. Green were married on a rainy October Saturday in 1959. The rain did not dampen their love, as they spent 57 wonderful years together.
The couple was blessed with three beautiful daughters and moved their young family from Delmar to Glens Falls in 1966, when Bill acquired a new job with Moore Business Forms, Inc. as sales representative for the northern district, retiring in 1988. During these years, the family shared many happy memories and outrageous adventures, especially when their English Setter, Lady, was involved. Never one to sit idle, Bill took on a new venture, owning and operating the R & F apartment complex in Glens Falls, a labor of love for the duration of his life. Bill served in the community as a member of the Board of Directors of the Glens Falls Area Youth Center, and his passion to help youth brought him to teach Sunday school at the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls. He was always an avid member and supporter of the Glens Falls Family YMCA.
Bill's fun-loving nature and sharp wit were a draw for family and friends, and that dynamic personality will be missed by all. He full-on tackled every event life presented to him. With his intensely competitive spirit and indomitable optimism, he hurdled over any challenge he faced and thrived on the thrill of all aspects of life, in good times and bad. Also gifted with a natural creativity, he enjoyed playing the piano, painting in watercolor, drawing barns and acting as the family tailor. Most of all, he cherished time spent with family, whether it be vacationing at Cape Cod, summer days on Lake George or staying at home; and he always made time for entertaining his grandchildren.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Reno and Frances, his big brother, Bob, and dear niece, Cynthia. He leaves behind the love of his life, Mary Ann, his children Deborah Green, Catherine Green and Nancy Montiel (Victor), his grandchildren Michael Sullivan and Scarlett Dyer, his nephew R. Jeffrey Green (Audrey), his niece Laura Collier (Brian), several nieces and nephews in the McDaniel clan and his grand-dogs Cal and Fiona.
Calling hours will take place Thursday, September 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, NY 12804.
A funeral service will take place at the funeral home, Friday, September 8, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Cox officiating.
Interment with military honors will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery in Delmar.
