William "Bill"
Rogers
Jul 30, 1918 — Sep 19, 2017
GLENS FALLS--- It is with profound sorrow that Harriet Rogers announces that her beloved spouse, Bill, after ninety-nine years of a full life well-lived, has returned to his Heavenly Father where he has now been reunited with his cherished son, Andy, his mother, Frances R. Burlett and his brothers, Fred and Kenneth.
A life-long resident of Glens Falls, Bill married Harriet Wood at St. Alphonsus church and, although two people were never more different in their then personal interests and ties, they enjoyed and celebrated sixty-nine years as one in a beautiful and love-filled marriage.
Bill, who graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1938, would proudly proclaim to all that he had worked from the age of nine, his first jobs consisting of collecting night crawlers after dark at local golf courses and giving guided tours of the then-accessible Cooper's Cave located in the Hudson River near the Glens Falls bridge. While attending high school, he would brag that he was a night baker, earning more than his step-father and brother. For years Bill worked at Hank's Newsroom on South Street and subsequently would relate many tales regarding the local iconic individuals who breathed daily life into "The Street of Dreams" in the late 30's and 40's.
During World War II, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and for thirty-nine months served at the 621 st Air Force Base, 809 th Bomb Squadron, assigned to the Testing and Development Unit in Pine Castle, Florida. He was honorably discharged on February 8, 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Both he and Harriet (who served with the Coast Guard during the war) are enshrined on the Veterans Memorial plaque located in Crandall Park. As a veteran couple, both were privileged to participate in a recent Leatherstocking Honor Flight to the Veterans' Memorials in Washington, D.C.
Bill was employed locally by the A & P Tea Company for eighteen years where he served as shop steward for United Food & Commercial Workers, AFL/CIO. Retiring at 60, he
found his true calling when he discovered volunteering and the joy of helping others. In addition to the local Senior Citizens in Glens Falls and Queensbury, he volunteered at St. Joseph's House of Grace, ARC, Salvation Army, Prospect Center programs, Meals on Wheels, Amanda's House, St. Alphonsus Church, RSVP and Aging in Place. In 2004, Bill and Harriet were honored as the Warren County Senior Citizens of the year.
Bill was predeceased by his cherished son, Andy, his parents, Frances R. Burlett and Bernard Rogers, and his brothers, Fred and Kenneth.
In addition to his wife, Harriet, left to mourn his loss are his nieces, Sandra Mannarino, Marion Longden, Sandra Hunt and Michelle (Samuel) Jarvis; his nephews, Fred (Rosemary) Rogers, Terry (Debra) Rogers, William (Mary Ann) Rogers and Knox Rogers; his niece and nephews of the heart, Patricia (Joseph) Kervin; Robert (Doris), Michael (Brenda) and John (Heather) O'Connor, and his faithful best friend, buddy and fellow Yankee fan, Charles (Sally) Nacy.
Bill's family would like to express special appreciation and gratitude to his close relatives and friends who were always nearby with generous help and support: Fred and Rosemary Rogers, Sandra Mannarino, Sally McGuirk, Charles Nacy, Liz Kurjiaka, Judy and Bill Deyette and Kathy and Stan Bienkowski. Each played a part in making it possible for Bill to remain in his own home until his life was complete.
Harriet and her family are also deeply indebted to the wonderful ladies who superbly cared for Bill's medical needs: JoAnn, Sam, Lucile, Shelby, Nichole and Linda. Together they made his days eventful and fun and his nights uneventful and serene. Their compassionate, capable and tender care afforded Bill comfort and peace of mind throughout the last few years of his life. Further appreciation is extended to Fr. Thomas Babiuch and Deacon William Bazinet for the encouragement, counseling and spiritual guidance they continually provided to both Bill and
Harriet. Even to the end of his time, Bill never lost his quick wit and sense of humor, much to the delight of his aides. Ever a gentleman and a gentle man, he was always willing to help others and he will be deeply and forever missed.
Be at rest, Dear Heart!
In lieu of flowers, the family would deeply appreciate donations to the "Bone Marrow Foundation, 515 Madison Avenue, Room 1130, New York, NY 10022-5456" in memory of Andrew W. Rogers.
Calling hours at Baker Funeral Home will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017. A funeral Mass in celebration of Bill's life will be held at St. Mary's Church, Warren Street, Glens Falls at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2017 with Father Thomas Babiuch officiating.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Condolences may be mailed to Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette Street, Queensbury, NY 12804, or e-mailed through www.bakerfuneralhome.com.
