QUEENSBURY --- William J. Skellie Jr., 86, passed away on September 16, 2019, after a brief illness. He was at home with his loving wife by his side.
Born on March 31, 1933 in West Glens Falls, NY, he was the son of William J. and Olive May (Hermance) Skellie.
William was a 1952 graduate of Glens Falls High School. Soon after graduating, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country until February of 1955. He went on to work for many years at Hollister's Plumbing and Heating.
After many years together, he married Linda L. Potter on April Fool's Day in 2015, which was fitting for he was known as a jokester.
William's many enjoyments included, as mentioned, telling jokes, going to OTB to watch harness horse racing, metal detecting, car ice racing and fixing cars. He also loved singing and listening to Johnny Cash songs, spending time with family and going to breakfast with his daughter. He was also a beautiful, and often comical, poet.
He was a proud member of Local 773 for 62 years.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Julie Smitley, and his siblings, Dorothy Mosher, Ernest Skellie, John Skellie, James Skellie, Darwin Skellie and Regina Kill.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Skellie; his ex-wife and friend, Barbara Skellie; his children, Edith Girard, Dina (Bill) Nolin, Sheila Skellie, Jay Skellie, Jeffrey Skellie, David Potter, Scotty (Ruthie) Potter, Diana (Burt) Schwab and Sandra (Keith) Dickinson; his grandchildren, Augustus (Betsy) Fleming, Zachary Starbird, Jeremy Nolin, Tyler Hamblin, Melissa Girard, Leigh Ann Rayno, Cari (Robert) Hamm, Jessica (Gary) Brodie, Sara (Jason) Karg, Lauren Potter, Bianca Lewis, Anthony Potter, Dylan Potter, Golla Camp-Potter, Lukas Camp-Potter; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Enzo Hamm, Ethan Karg, Oakley and Landon Potter, Matthew Girard, and Poppie's little girl, Doriana Cook; his sisters, Diane Skellie and Christina Murray; his brothers, Stephen (Joan) Skellie, Joseph (Lynn) Skellie and Michael (Margaret) Skellie; his mother-in-law, Doris Sherman, and sister-in-law, JoAnn Skellie; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his beloved dog, Jonee, and Penny, his cat, Nymphadora, and his bird, Dunkin.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, at the Community Chapel of West Glens Falls located on 55 Main Street, Queensbury. A reception will follow the service at the church.
